Fannish Update

I am almost finished watching the second season of Man from UNCLE. I wince when I consider all the wasted years of my life when I was *not watching this show.*
On a mildly related note, I have just finished watching the entirety of NCIS. All of it. From start to finish. I only meant to watch a couple of episodes, just to see if David McCallum was still sexy (he is), and fell to my arch-nemesis the Police Drama. It was like having a bag of Doritos. I had to watch just...one...more...
I have also watched the entirety of Life on Mars (the UK one). It was, possibly, a mistake to watch this before NCIS, because about 75% of time I was watching NCIS and wondering when the plot was going to twist next and then it never did. (This isn't necessarily a criticism of NCIS--Life on Mars had 5-7 extra minutes for their story, and a lot more leeway when it came to what they could say and do on screen. It's apples and oranges where I had to remind myself every now and then I *was* eating an orange and not an apple). Life on Mars was amazing and awesome and I'm now more than a little in love with John Simm.
Also, Doctor Who is making me nervous. I keep thinking "Okay, there's no way they can top *that,*" and then they do. It's like watching someone juggle plates and wondering how long they can keep it up, and also wondering if the answer is "forever, baby!" :)

Date: 2008-06-18 06:52 pm (UTC)Life on Mars was fantastic. I weep that someone felt the need to make a US version. I also hesitate to watch it because well, the weeping. And also the lack of Philip Glenister and John Simm. I mean, without Sam and Gene, what's the point? I was leery of Ashes to Ashes because of the lack of John Simm and the Sam & Gene (or Sam/Gene, if one prefers) relationship, but it turned out to be really good. Of course, it probably also helped that I remember 1981 a lot better than 1973. *g*

Date: 2008-06-18 08:15 pm (UTC)I haven't yet watched Ashes to Ashes, but I've heard really good things about it, despite the lack of Sam. One of my old friends from high school told me she found Ashes to Ashes slightly more painful to watch, because whereas the fashions from Life on Mars were ones she wore that her parents picked out and bought, the fashions from Ashes to Ashes were things she had worn *on purpose.* :)
I am so afraid of the US version. Despite the fact that Colm Meany will most likely not suck as Gene, I have no plans to watch it.

Date: 2008-06-18 08:43 pm (UTC)Napolean and Illya really are the ur-text of slash couples. One of my friends did a presentation at PhreakNIC and at Hypericon a couple of years ago called "Sexy Nerds," and she argued that Illya was the original sexy nerd. I now fully understand what she was talking about. :)

And yes, I believe IK is the original source of hot geekdom.

Date: 2008-06-18 08:34 pm (UTC)And yes, I know the feeling about Doctor Who. I'm nervous about these last three episodes, but as long as RTD and SM are writing and DT is playing the Doctor, it can't be bad. I could watch DT sit and read the phone book.

Date: 2008-06-18 08:49 pm (UTC)I didn't watch Life on Mars for ages because I had no idea what it was about. As soon as I found out, I was all over it and sucked down all 16 episodes as fast as I could. I also had no idea that John Simm was in it (I can be so oblivious about these things...:))
I still have your Blackpool DVDs, by the way. Are you free Saturday? Maybe we could have lunch. Let me know.

Date: 2008-06-19 12:05 am (UTC)Oh, I grabbed Life on Mars first chance I got! I'd already seen an episode on BBC America before John Simm played the Master so brilliantly. I've got both seasons on DVD and rewatch it often. Another of John Simm's DVDs to get is State of Play. I've got that one also.
I'd love to get Blackpool back from you sometime. Lunch on Saturday would be good, though it'll have to circa 11am. I've got a brige club game at 1pm.
