DragonCon--Day 2 (Saturday)

Started the day by going to the Stargate Offworld and getting registered. Then Albert and I went to the Conquest panel.
I should probably explain that I'm a huge fan of Conquest. I had no idea until very recently (like two weeks ago) that Peter Woodward had any connection to science fiction, and I couldn't believe it when I looked at the guest index and saw his name *and* that he was doing a panel on Conquest. In retrospect, I should have known that Conquest would have an appeal to the fannish community, and more so because fans of the actor would follow his work from Crusade.
Anyway, the panel was terrific. On a completely shallow level, Woodward looked *very* good. Ahem. He was wearing a bright blue shirt that was extremely flattering (anyone who's seen the History Channel's series on Ancient Egypt knows what I'm talking about), and he was funny and charismatic. He said from the start that the panel would run short, because who could talk for an hour and a half, but at the end of 90 minutes we were all still there.
Perhaps the highlight for me was the analysis of Klingon culture based on their weapon of choice. I'm afraid that I can't do it justice because the hand gestures were so important, but Woodward's conclusion was that Klingons are, as it were, multi-organed and bisexual. Not sure what the Klingons would say about that. And of course there was the bull-riding demonstration, but that was pretty much a "you had to be there" thing.
After the panel, I dropped by the Offworld site again, and hung around long enough to participate in a trivia contest. I actually won, though of course
graculus had to point out that the main competition had been a 13-year-old kid. Mostly I was lucky to get questions like "According to the television series, how do you spell Sha're?" and "Who's Teal'c's son?" because he kicked my ass on techy stuff. Anyway, I got a medic patch, which was cool.
Back at the Hyatt, we encountered Erynn and went to lunch, then took a tour of the dealer's room. Escaped without buying anything. I went back over to Offworld for the writer's panel, and met up with Marge and then
graculus and
xochiquetzl (whose name I now know how to pronounce properly). There was a raffle for a couple of prizes, and when my name got drawn I had a choice between a Leah Rosenthal calendar and a zine. I asked one question: "Is the zine gen or slash?" It was gen, so I took the calendar.
Afterwards, Graculus, Marge and I went back to the Hyatt and decided to have dinner. I called Albert and we had one of the those classic cell phone moments where you start asking where the other is and talk until you realize you're looking at each other. We went over to the food court around 6:30. We stayed there until they kicked us out at 10, talking about fandom and stories and slash and taking in the various sights, so to speak. As one of my friends said, "Spandex is a privilege, not a right," but I can attest that there were some very privileged folks walking around the food court.
I haven't mentioned much about costumes, because I'm extremely ignorant of anything to do with anime and comics and therefore don't recognize a good many of them. There were a good deal more Hogwarts students running around the place, mostly Gryffindors or Slytherins, and I saw a pretty good Snape and an excellent McGonagall. There was even a girl in Slytherin Quidditch gear, which was extremely cool. And, not to put too fine a point on it, hot as well. There were several Jack Sparrows weaving around, and one of them looked absolutely fantastic, right down to the quill and beads in the hair. There was also a very authentic-looking group of Uruk-hai, and the usual contingent of storm troopers. I didn't see the group of Colonial Warriors this year, but I also missed Richard Hatch's panel, so I guess I was merely destined to have a Battlestar Galactica-free con this year.
Anyway, the food court conversation was one of the highlights of the con for me. It's just great to be able to sit down and talk face to face about whatever pops into my head, and have people who will geek out with me about Stargate and Daniel and Harry Potter. Good times. :)
