Greetings From Beyond

Yes, hello, it's me, popping up from my gopher hole again. I've had modem issues. I actually still have them, but finally realized that I couldn't afford a new one anytime in the near future (or distant past, either) and had best tackle the old one and make it work again. So, I whipped out the Scotch tape, the Q-tips, and the old jiggle-it-until-it-works-again technique, and finally the hellish shrieking noise was replaced by silence interspersed with the occasional dial tone. So long as I don't move, laugh, cough, or breathe too much, it only disconnects me about every 15 minutes. :)

In other news....

We are all well and fine here, humans and felines alike. Boo has started playschool, and loves it. She did cry on the first day...when we came to take her home, that is. I'm still adjusting to the "having nearly whole days to myself" thing, and have spent several afternoons napping Just Because I Can. I did make myself a bit more useful on Monday by going to donate blood. And I've read and/or listened to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince four times.

Al is working harder, alas, but it balances out a bit because he's getting to do some things he really, really wants, so that's okay. And he still has lots of time for Boo, which is what he really wants. Night before last he invented a new game for Boo called "Bouncing on the bed while listening to the BBC over the internet," yesterday they went to see some traditional dancing, and over the weekend they went to a Greek cultural festival. Keeping busy.

The felines are also in good health. Mimi has caught and eaten two grown rabbits this week, so the outdoors thing seems to still be working for her, even if it means I have to hurry Boo out so she doesn't start asking questions about why there's half a rabbit on the deck. Greebo persists in his attempts to escape, but appears to have lost some enthusiasm for the outdoors since being stuck outside overnight a couple of times. Sylvester is still doing well on his thyroid medication, and except for increasing problems with getting his claws stuck is getting along fine.

The biggest news, I suppose, is that we are now officially a Jewish household. Well, two out of three. Hubby has been thinking about converting for quite some time, and finally joined a Reform temple in July. One of the rabbis had, initially, some serious reservations because I was pretty clear about not wanting to convert myself. She was (understandably) worried about how it would affect Al if I wasn't supportive of his choice. Once I spoke to her and the head rabbi, though, they apparently were convinced that, no, honestly, I believe it's Al's life and he can do what he wants. Honestly, so long as he's not going to start eating babies and abjuring sex, I really don't care.

I thought a bit more about Boo, since the rabbis would prefer that Al raise his daughter as a Jew. When it came down to it, I concluded that so long as they taught her right from wrong, and respect for other people, that was fine by me. I was also pleased that there was no binding commitment for her, only a promise on Al's part that he'd raise her Jewish, and then it will be up to her alone, when she's old enough, to decide for herself what she wants to do. Can't ask for more than that.

The only downside--if one can call it such--is that the members of the temple feel, apparently, that they've failed in the past to make non-Jewish spouses feel welcome. As a result, I've been a bit inundated with invitations to mixers, lectures, and other social stuff. As [livejournal.com profile] sunshinedew put it: "Okay, I feel wecome, now stop taking up my free time!" :) Seriously, though, it's been reassuring to me that Boo will be allowed to respect her mommy's religion. :)

While I'm recapping, here's the knitting tally for the last few months:

4 bears
4 bear bags
12 blanket squares
10 hats
4 pairs booties
2 sets pillowcase edgings
1,933,938,830,323,395 fish

Lastly, I appear to be the owner of a new car. Well, a different car. A different minivan, to be precise. My old 1993 Jeep Cherokee finally stranded me two or three times too many (only 200,000 miles on it, go figure), so I started searching for newer wheels. I have now apparently purchased a 2001 Honda Odyssey.

I say "apparently" because I got a friend of my dad's to look for one and bought it over the phone based on such exacting descriptions as "it's a nice-looking vehicle." And, just like when we were looking at our house, my mother was able to stump me with the question, "What color is it?" But it is insured, by golly!

Well, those appear to be the highlights. I hope everyone has been well, and maybe now I can catch up on what you all have been doing. Skip=100000000 ought to do it. :)

Yay! I'm glad to see you're not dead in a ditch. *g* And I'm glad things seem to be going well except for the modem troubles.

Hi!!!

And yes, I so hear you about the congregation thing. I mean, I was raised Jewish (defined as "no matter how assimilated you feel, when the Nazis come back, you're going in the ovens" ::sigh::), but my sisters both belong to congregations (one Reform, one Conservative), and it's a festival of "come! join us!"

Personally? I like the kind of socializing the internet affords: you can play and play and then you can just...go offline. *g*

Hello there!!!

And hello to Miss Boo and Mr. Al. And the kitties. :-)

All is well here. I still follow the bagpipers around a lot, and went out to DC to visit Mizzzzzz [livejournal.com profile] concorde a couple of weeks ago. Life is good.

It lives! :P

We've missed you! No more disappearing!

hello lady!

Dirl!!!

Missed you!

Cool on the car--it's good to have dependable wheels.

Not cool on the modem. My old orange iBook has a similar problem and *man* is it frustrating. I'm lucky enough to be able to use wireless, reasonably high bandwidth these days, it is definitely a necessityluxury.

Glad you're back!
